News

  1. Coach Todd Monken said Monday that Gabriel's back injury is not considered serious, Zac Jackson of The Athletic reports.

Gabriel has been placed on injured reserve to begin the season, so he'll be required to miss at least the first four games of 2026. It sounds like it was more of a procedural move by Cleveland to buy the team more time to sort out its quarterback situation, one that also involves starter Deshaun Watson and current backups Shedeur Sanders and rookie Taylen Green. Gabriel showed enough in the preseason to warrant a roster spot, either in Cleveland or elsewhere.

  2. The Browns placed Gabriel (back) on injured reserve Sunday with a designation to return, Camryn Justice of News 5 Cleveland reports.

Gabriel thus will be required to miss at least the first four games of the campaign due to a back issue. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Sunday that Gabriel initially suffered the injury in preseason Week 3, discomfort followed, and he had an MRI before this transaction was made official. In the meantime, Deshaun Watson will lead the Browns offense, with Shedeur Sanders backing him up and rookie sixth-rounder Taylen Green acting as the third-stringer.

  3. Gabriel will make Cleveland's 53-man roster, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports.

Gabriel took a back seat to Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders for most of the preseason as those two QBs engaged in a competition that culminated in Watson being named the Week 1 starter. Gabriel finally got a chance to start a preseason game in the finale and made the most of his opportunity with a trio of passing touchdowns. The 2025 third-round pick will begin the regular season as the third option on a Browns QB depth chart that may also include rookie sixth-round pick Taylen Green, whom Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Browns are hoping to keep on the roster as well.

  4. Gabriel completed 12 of 15 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns while rushing four times for three yards in Thursday's 37-13 preseason win over the Patriots.

Gabriel got the start in the preseason finale with the Browns resting anointed Week 1 starter Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders. The 2025 third-round pick made the most of his opportunity Thursday, throwing touchdown passes of six and 14 yards to Luke Floriea, as well as a seven-yard touchdown pass to Ahmani Marshall in the first half before subbing out for rookie sixth-round pick Taylen Green at halftime. Gabriel is third on Cleveland's QB depth chart heading into the regular season, but he started six games during his rookie campaign and could work his way into the mix again, as neither Watson nor Sanders has looked particularly impressive.

  5. Gabriel will start at quarterback in Thursday's preseason finale against the Patriots, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Gabriel has seen limited action during the preseason, but with fellow signal-callers DeShaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders — per the same source — set to sit out Thursday, Gabriel will get an extended look. One of the other quarterbacks is expected to be announced as Cleveland's starter Monday, and Gabriel will presumably open the regular season behind both.
