News

  1. Strand (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game against the Packers.

Strand saw some action in relief of Cooper Rush in the 34-3 loss to Carolina in Week 2. However, he didn't play well, throwing for 59 yards and one interception off 8-for-15 passing, adding two carries for 16 yards. With Michael Penix (knee) and Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) back in the mix, and Rush serving as the emergency signal-caller, Strand's services won't be needed in Week 3.

  2. Strand completed just eight of 15 passes for 59 yards and an interception in the Falcons' 34-3 loss to the Panthers on Sunday.

Cooper Rush was benched after going 10-for-17 passing with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Strand came on in relief and was just as ineffective. The 22-year-old is an undrafted rookie who played his college football at tiny Minnesota State-Moorhead, so it's no surprise he wasn't ready for the NFL in his first regular-season game action. With Michael Penix (knee) potentially back for Thursday night's game at Green Bay, Strand will be a cut candidate. Strand would make more sense on the practice squad where he can learn in a no-stress environment.

  3. Strand is listed as the No. 2 quarterback for Sunday's game versus the Panthers, Marc Raimondi of ESPN.com reports.

With Michael Penix (knee) out and Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) doubtful, Cooper Rush (back) will start again in Week 2. While Strand is currently penciled in as the No. 2 signal-caller against Carolina, he'll see action if Rush is forced to miss any time.

  4. Strand could be an option for Sunday's game against the Panthers, Marc Raimondi of ESPN.com reports.

The Falcons' injury woes at quarterback could lead to Strand being active and available again in Week 2. Not only are Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) and Michael Penix (knee) dealing with injuries, but Cooper Rush is also getting treatment for his back. Tagovailoa was not practicing Wednesday, while Rush was expected to be a full participant. Penix was throwing off to the side. Depending how the injury reports shake out over the coming days, Strand could be the backup yet again for the Falcons as they host the Panthers.

  5. Strand will serve as the Falcons' backup quarterback behind Cooper Rush for Sunday's game against the Steelers, Marc Raimondi of ESPN.com reports.

The Falcons chose to carry four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, and that looks to have been a savvy move after Tua Tagovailoa was ruled out for Week 1 due to an oblique injury he sustained in Thursday's practice. With Michael Penix (knee) also sidelined, the Falcons will turn to the veteran Rush to start under center while Strand — an undrafted rookie out of Minnesota State-Moorhead — operates as the QB2. Strand played in all three of the Falcons' preseason games, completing 24 of 36 passes for 306 yards, one touchdown and one interception while turning 17 carries into 29 yards and two scores.
